This makes me think of a beautiful post that I mentioned in one of my Read This Week features; a post by @HarrietThugman about Black people of other cultural backgrounds who diminish Black American culture, and shouldn’t….for it is so rich.

My cultural heritage involves a mixture of my love for some things specific to Jamaican culture (because of my background, being raised in a Jamaican family by Jamaican parents, but being raised in America and actually born in America) and some things specific to being an American Black (I love how Nikki says Black is the NOUN and American is the adjective), and some things that seems to connect Black people despite where in the diaspora we are.

But why is hipster racism, bigotry as an edgy joke for white people (and other people), so persistent? For answers, ThinkProgress’ Alyssa Rosenberg points us toward an 1979 Village Voice article by influential music critic Lester Bangs, titled “The White Noise Supremacists” [PDF] — and it’s sickeningly familiar. Bangs was an integral part of the late ’70s / early ’80s CBGB’s scene in New York City, a scene which has been posthumously hailed as a high point for racial harmony in which punk, rap, reggae, and new wave all came together. Bangs describes it less charitably as a place where white punks rebelled against everything, and quickly forgot why they’d gotten started. The result? What he refers to as “racist chic,” the employing of swastikas and epithets to get a rise out of some authority or other, and the resulting deeply homogeneous scene that offers no trouble to the actual-racist CEOs of the record industry.

Bangs calls out a lot of people and names a lot of complicated factors, but is hardest on himself. It’s an essential inside look at the mechanics of white-dominated counterculture, a decades-old movement that wants authenticity from people of color and not much else.

Salon has an excellent interview with American law scholar Kenneth Mack on the way race and the law intersect and define each other. Here’s a quote on civil rights lawyers and their personal experience in the black community at the time.

What did you learn about the relationship between race and the law by writing it?

By looking at the civil rights struggle through the lives of black civil rights lawyers we learn about the contested nature of racial identity, even in an era where segregation was supposed to make race into something fixed, not fluid.

I think this speaks to how we think of race as an unchanging dynamic today even though it’s been in fluctuation since the concept was created. Also it works to disabuse people of the notion that there was an overwhelming consensus in the Civil Rights Era as it’s been properly defined when our heroes of yesteryear had many of the intra-community pressures and differences that people still hold today. The interview is great and I’d recommend folks to go read the whole thing.

I was only accepted into the University of Texas to fill a void. It has nothing to do with my capabilities, but UT needs a few Blackheads, or a splash of color, on this campus to prove that its not a “racist” institution. But when I see stuff like that…….

The case of Trayvon Martin has affected me so much as a AFRICAN AMERICAN, FUTURE MOTHER, SISTER, SOCIAL WORKER, and FUTURE BLACK LEADER. Trayvon could have been my little brother. It just hearts my heart to see that justice has not been served. Where does logic come into play? A grown man shot and killed an unarmed 16 year old boy, and he has yet to be put behind bars!!! Not to mention this has happened almost a month ago! This upsets to me to such a degree that tears are coming to my eyes as I write this blog. Can you imagine the pain that Mrs. and MR. Martin have been faced with? The thought of burrying your own son is just crazy especially with the cause of his death. I just dont get it! But My fellow african american brithers and sisters need to WAKE UP!!!!!!!!! You see how they are treating us!!!!! IITS TIME TO WAKE UP!!!! We should not be treated like this. Its 2012 not 1920. There is clearlty no such thing as equality in this crazy world we live in. THe question is what are YOU gonna do to change this, and make a difference!
